Masked Individual Smashes Virgin Mary Statue Outside NYC Church; Police Probe as Possible Hate Crime

Authorities in New York City are investigating the desecration of a Virgin Mary statue located outside St. Rita Roman Catholic Church in Long Island City, an incident that occurred early on August 1 and is being examined as a potential hate crime. A masked individual was captured on surveillance video scaling a fence and then repeatedly striking the religious figure with a hammer until it was dislodged from its base.

The Diocese of Brooklyn released the surveillance footage, which shows the man, dressed in a dark T-shirt and shorts, entering a courtyard where the statue of the Blessed Mother stood. At approximately 1:42 a.m. on August 1, the individual produced a hammer from his pocket and proceeded to assault the statue before knocking it off its pedestal. He then exited the courtyard by climbing back over the fence and departing the scene.

Pattern of Vandalism at St. Rita Church

Church officials have indicated that this latest act of destruction marks the fourth time St. Rita Roman Catholic Church has been targeted by vandalism since the beginning of 2024. The New York City Police Department is actively investigating this recent incident as a possible hate crime, reflecting a broader concern about such acts.

Previous acts of vandalism at the parish this year include the destruction of a 60-year-old stained-glass window, graffiti that marred a statue of St. Francis of Assisi and the adjacent sidewalk, and damage inflicted upon a statue of St. Jude situated inside the church.

Rising Hate Crime Statistics

John Quaglione, the deputy press secretary for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, highlighted a troubling trend in crime statistics. He noted that the NYPD's most recent update shows a 9.4% increase in hate crimes across the city during the seven-month period from January to July of the current year, compared to the same timeframe last year.
