A series of highly anticipated primary contests across the Upper Midwest recently delivered significant victories for the progressive faction of the Democratic Party, though one major electoral test in the pivotal state of Wisconsin still awaits a definitive outcome.
Progressive Candidates Secure Minnesota Nominations
Minnesota provided some of the clearest indications of progressive strength. Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan successfully secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Senator Tina Smith. Simultaneously, Representative Ilhan Omar, a prominent progressive lawmaker, secured another primary victory in her heavily Democratic Minneapolis-area district.
Flanagan’s victory came after a closely observed contest against Representative Angie Craig, a clash that highlighted the divide between the party’s progressive and establishment wings. Flanagan garnered endorsements from notable figures on the left, while Craig received support from several leading establishment Democrats.
Meanwhile, Representative Ilhan Omar's win in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District Democratic primary marks another success for one of the most visible members of the House's progressive contingent. This adds to a series of primary victories for the congresswoman, who has previously overcome well-funded attempts to unseat her.
Wisconsin Governor's Race Still Unresolved
The most significant outstanding question from the night's elections centers on Wisconsin, where Democratic voters are still awaiting the final results of the primary to determine who will represent the party in the race to succeed outgoing Governor Tony Evers.
State Representative Francesca Hong, a self-identified democratic socialist, is vying to extend the progressive left’s string of successes in one of the nation’s most closely divided battleground states. Democrats are intensely focused on retaining control of the governor’s mansion in Wisconsin.
Hong, a 37-year-old former chef and single mother, has garnered endorsements from nationally recognized progressive figures, including Representatives Omar and Ro Khanna of California.
Her campaign platform includes several key proposals: increasing Wisconsin’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $20 an hour, establishing guaranteed paid leave, and implementing a one-year moratorium on new AI data centers.
Hong has also faced scrutiny concerning social media posts from previous years where she advocated for defunding and abolishing the police, positions she now states she no longer supports.
With most of Tuesday’s marquee primary races decided, Wisconsin remains the night’s ultimate test of whether the progressive left can sustain its momentum into a crucial battleground state.
