DiJonai Carrington Returns to Play for Sky Amidst "White Privilege" Post Controversy

Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington participated in Monday night's game against the Seattle Storm, despite a recent controversy involving a social media post and a Flagrant 2 foul. The Women's National Basketball Association has not publicly announced any disciplinary measures against the veteran player following the incident during Saturday's contest against the Indiana Fever.

Carrington entered Monday's game with 5:21 remaining in the first quarter. While a noticeable cheer arose from the Storm home crowd, it was not immediately clear if the applause was directed at Carrington's entry or for rookie center Awa Fam, who was also checking in for Seattle.

The On-Court Incident and Post-Game Reaction

The controversy stems from an incident approximately two minutes before the end of the first quarter in Saturday's game, which the Fever won 90-86. During a breakaway by Sophie Cunningham toward the basket, Carrington pursued her defensively. Instead of making a play on the ball, Carrington struck Cunningham in the face, causing her to fall. Officials promptly blew the whistle.

Cunningham reacted with visible anger, rising from the court to confront Carrington. Teammates intervened to restrain Cunningham, who slightly pushed Carrington before officials also stepped in. Following an official review, the foul by Carrington was upgraded to a Flagrant 2, resulting in her ejection from the game.

Shortly after her ejection, Carrington posted "WHITE PRIVILEGE" on her Threads account, tagging the Fever's team account. The initial post lacked further explanation, leaving observers to speculate whether the comment referred to Cunningham, the officials' decision to classify the foul as a Flagrant 2, or the Fever organization itself. Carrington did not explicitly name Cunningham, and there was no immediate evidence linking the foul to Cunningham's public stance on transgender athletes in women's sports, a topic that has generated considerable debate within the WNBA recently.

Carrington Clarifies Her Social Media Statement

On Monday, Carrington offered a clarification, responding on X to sports commentator and former NFL player Emmanuel Acho, who had criticized her for labeling the foul incident as "White privilege."

"I've never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption). Try exercising your critical thinking skills, I know you studied psych," Carrington's reply stated. "Furthermore, I'm the LAST thing from ignorant or asinine when it comes to speaking on 'white privilege,' do ya research on that one. I actually went to school, one of the top universities might I add, to educate myself on this exact subject. I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it."

Ongoing Debates and Previous Controversies

Sophie Cunningham has been a central figure in a broader political discussion concerning the participation of biological men in women's sports. On Saturday, a fourth rally supporting her viewpoint took place outside the United Center in Chicago, where the Fever were playing an away game. Counter-protesters also gathered near the venue. Cunningham has publicly stated she harbors no animosity toward transgender individuals but believes in safeguarding women and girls in sports, describing her position as "common sense." Her stance has drawn criticism, and the debate continues both within and outside WNBA arenas, as well as online.

This is not the first instance of Carrington being involved in controversy related to Indiana Fever players. Earlier in the 2024 season, while playing for the Connecticut Sun, Carrington publicly mocked then-rookie Caitlin Clark, suggesting she was flopping. Later, after receiving racist abuse online, Carrington referred to Fever supporters as "the nastiest fans in the W."

During the 2024 WNBA Playoffs, Carrington made contact with Clark's eye while defending a pass, resulting in Clark sustaining a black eye.
