Donald Trump Attributes National Mall Grass Damage to Vandals After July 4th Event

Former President Donald Trump has attributed extensive patches of dead grass on the National Mall, specifically in the vicinity of the World War II Memorial, to acts of vandalism. This particular area had recently hosted a large public gathering for an Independence Day celebration featuring the former president. Trump made this assertion without presenting specific evidence or elaborating on his rationale for concluding that vandals were responsible for the turf damage.

Through a post on Truth Social, Trump shared an image depicting sections of brown and withered grass across what was once a vibrant green expanse near the memorial. He wrote,

"Look what VANDALS did to the grass connecting the vandalized World War II Monument and the vandalized Reflecting Pool, which will be opened again, and better than ever, shortly."

He further added,

"Anybody who thinks the Reflecting Pool wasn’t vandalized should go back to Law School!"

Last month, Trump organized a significant Independence Day event on the very lawn he now claims was damaged by vandals. The celebration featured a substantial stage and seating arrangements that occupied nearly the entire grassy area. Attendees gathered to hear from the former president and witness a fireworks display commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary.

Subsequent photographs from the days following the event depicted workers dismantling the temporary structures, revealing brown and compromised turf underneath. While these images clearly show that event infrastructure covered a large portion of the affected lawn, they do not, on their own, definitively establish the sole cause of all the grass damage.

A Pattern of Accusations

This is not the first instance where Trump has blamed vandalism for damage to various renovation projects in Washington, D.C. In several previous cases, his claims have been made without supporting evidence and have sometimes contradicted explanations provided by his own officials.

Earlier this month, Trump publicly criticized Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. His comments followed her office's decision to dismiss a vandalism case related to the Reflecting Pool. New evidence had emerged in that case, indicating widespread damage to the pool's liner was due to a flawed installation process and a rushed completion schedule ahead of earlier Independence Day activities, thereby weakening the prosecution's case against the defendant.

Recent Vandalism Incidents

Separately, an arrest was made on Friday in connection with vandalism specifically at the World War II Memorial itself. The monument was found defaced with the words "Clean hands dirty $" painted on it, and a fountain nearby was filled with bubbles. Felony charges in this particular case are being pursued against Melissa Farris, according to statements from Pirro.

However, the charging documents related to Farris's arrest do not reference the grassy area that Trump highlighted in his recent social media post. Authorities have stated that Farris had previously been apprehended for camping on federal property a few blocks away from the World War II Memorial, but not at the specific lawn location Trump mentioned.

On August 1, Trump had published a different photograph of the same area of dead grass, which appeared to show the numbers "86 47." Federal officials have interpreted these numbers as a potential threat against Trump. Notably, these numbers were not visible in the photo Trump shared on Sunday regarding the current claims. Trump cited the August 1 image as substantiation against Pirro's findings, describing it as "a pure case of VANDALISM, that included the grass." He further elaborated,

"There may have been some contractor difficulty, but the major damage was caused by VANDALS!"
