Republicans have taken a significant step forward in their strategic objective to maintain control of the House of Representatives following the November elections.
In Washington's 3rd Congressional District, a Republican contender who received the backing of former President Donald Trump successfully navigated a jungle primary. This candidate is now set to challenge incumbent Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a Democrat, in the general election this fall.
Understanding the Primary Election Format
A jungle primary operates distinctly from traditional primaries, as it does not separate candidates by political party. Instead, all contenders compete on a single ballot, and the top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election.
In this particular race, Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican state Sen. John Braun emerged as the two leading vote recipients and will now compete for the congressional seat currently held by Gluesenkamp Perez.
The Incumbent's Path to the General Election
For Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez, her journey through the primary involved fending off challenges from the progressive wing of her own party. Among her opponents was Brent Hennrich, a progressive politician whose platform included proposals such as increased taxation on wealthy individuals and Medicare for All.
Hennrich openly criticized the moderate Democrat, alleging that she too frequently sided with Republicans, thereby undermining the progressive agenda. His campaign website, for instance, reportedly highlighted instances where she voted alongside the GOP.
Despite these internal party dynamics, Gluesenkamp Perez, who is seeking a third term, is widely considered the Democratic Party's strongest asset for retaining this pivotal swing district in Southwest Washington state.
With Braun's advancement, the contest is now anticipated to be one of the most fiercely competitive House elections across the nation.
Introducing the Republican Challenger
John Braun presents a more conventional Republican profile, distinguishing him from previous candidates in the district. This contrasts with former Trump administration official Joe Kent, whose associations with far-right organizations made him a contentious figure in prior general elections. Kent previously ran against and lost to Gluesenkamp Perez twice before serving as Trump's director of the National Counterterrorism Center from 2025 until earlier this year.
Braun is a former Navy captain and a businessman whose campaign is centered on a commitment to curb what he describes as reckless spending by the federal government. He currently holds the position of minority leader in the Washington State Senate.
In an April 2026 post on Truth Social, former President Trump publicly endorsed Braun, asserting that he:
“will work hard to Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Support our Great Military/Veterans, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”
