WASHINGTON, N.J. – While Washington, D.C., remains the focal point of American political discourse, a distinct location in New Jersey, more than a hundred miles away, could play a crucial role in determining the balance of power in Congress for the remainder of President Donald Trump's term. This locale, a small community, recently hosted House Speaker Mike Johnson, who appealed to Republican supporters to back Representative Tom Kean Jr. in his bid for re-election this November. Kean, a Republican representing New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, is campaigning for his third term. The district is notable for encompassing President Trump's Bedminster golf course, a property where he frequently resides.
This particular district stands out as one of the nation's most contested electoral zones this year. Despite President Trump securing a narrow two-point victory here in 2024, the district subsequently shifted, favoring Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill by an identical margin in 2025. Consequently, Democrats perceive a significant chance to achieve another win in the upcoming November elections by electing Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, to the House. Given the limited number of politically competitive House seats nationwide, the outcome in this district could be pivotal in determining which party holds the majority in the next legislative session.
Competing Narratives and Campaign Strategies
Speaking during his campaign gathering, Representative Kean asserted his effectiveness as a legislator, highlighting his efforts to deliver benefits to the district and his responsiveness to constituent needs. He drew a sharp contrast with his opponent, whom he characterized as an "abject partisan." Kean further alleged,
"She's actually stopped going to church because there are Republicans [there]. So when you think about that contrast — a person can't even go to religious services with people of the other party — she'll never work across the aisle. She'll be always in the far-left corner of whoever is in her caucus and whoever is in her leadership. And that's not what this district needs."In response to Kean's claims, Carly Jones, a spokesperson for the Bennett campaign, countered,
"Rebecca is an active member of her local church and talks openly on the campaign trail about her faith, which inspired her to serve her country in uniform and run for office. She is proudly building a coalition of Democrats, Independents and Republicans to flip this seat in November."
Kean emphasized his track record of legislative accomplishments under both the Biden and Trump administrations, underscoring his bipartisan approach. This strategy was subtly reinforced by the campaign's visual presentation at his event: while the congressman's name was prominently displayed, explicit references to "GOP" or "Republican" were absent. A sign at the entrance simply read "Tom Kean for Congress." Historically, the party holding the presidency often experiences significant losses in Congress during midterm elections, as voters critical of the incumbent president tend to support the opposing party. Despite having legislation enacted into law by President Joe Biden, Kean firmly stated his "full" support for President Trump.
"He's done great things for this country and will continue to do great things for this country. He has been a very effective leader,"Kean remarked about the president.
Broader Republican Strategy and Personal Challenges
To further energize the base, Speaker Johnson brought in former All-Star professional baseball player Mark Teixeira for the Friday event. Teixeira engaged with attendees, posing for photographs, and is himself a congressional candidate expected to secure a reliably Republican seat in Texas. Beyond local campaigning, Republican leadership is also leveraging the recent emergence of far-left challenges that have unseated entrenched Democratic figures. They present this trend as an argument against allowing Democrats to gain control of the House of Representatives.
Earlier this year, from March through June, Representative Kean was conspicuously absent from both his campaign activities and legislative duties in Congress. The reasons for his absence remained largely undisclosed until he publicly revealed he was undergoing treatment for depression. Following his return, he subsequently introduced legislative proposals designed to improve access to and affordability of mental healthcare.
