A middle school teacher in Kentucky is facing serious criminal charges after authorities alleged conduct involving a student that crossed into illegal territory. Sadie M. Flores, 25, of Mayfield, was taken into custody on Friday afternoon and charged with grooming a minor, a Class D felony under a Kentucky law that became effective just weeks ago, on July 15.
Investigation Leads to Arrest
According to the Graves County Sheriff's Office, Flores, an employee at Graves County Middle School, is accused of engaging in an improper relationship with a minor student within the district. The allegations were initially brought to the attention of Graves County Schools administrators, who promptly notified the Graves County Sheriff's Office, initiating a criminal investigation.
Detectives stated that their investigation involved various measures, including the seizure of electronic records and conducting interviews. Flores was interviewed on Friday afternoon before being arrested around 3:30 p.m. She was initially booked into the Graves County Restricted Custody Center and later transferred to a detention facility in another county.
Sheriff Jon Hayden confirmed that the investigation into the matter is still active and ongoing.
School District Responds to Allegations
Graves County Schools Superintendent Matt Madding issued a statement confirming the district's immediate action upon learning of the claims. "District administration was made aware of an allegation involving a teacher at Graves County Middle School. School officials immediately reported this information to the Graves County Sheriff's Department for investigation," Madding stated. He added, "We have since been informed that, as a result of that investigation, charges have been filed against this teacher."
Madding emphasized that due to the ongoing nature of both the criminal investigation and the related personnel matter, the district is limited in the information it can publicly disclose. However, he underscored that the safety and well-being of students remain the district's paramount concern.
"We take any allegation involving the safety of a child or the professional conduct of an employee extremely seriously and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and the appropriate authorities," Madding affirmed.
The grooming charge is based on a Kentucky statute enacted on July 15. This new law establishes a felony offense for adults accused of fostering inappropriate relationships with minors, even prior to any sexual abuse occurring.
Authorities have not yet released further details concerning the alleged relationship, the age of the student involved, or whether additional charges may be brought as the investigation progresses.
