Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Shares Egg-Freezing Journey, Criticizes Trump Administration on Reproductive Rights

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, has publicly shared her decision to undergo egg freezing. She revealed this deeply personal choice through a series of videos on Instagram Stories, explaining that the procedure offers her greater control over her future while also using the announcement to critique the Trump administration's stance on women's reproductive health policies.

The progressive legislator, known for her role in the "Squad," uploaded the videos on a Saturday, explaining that she had contemplated and saved for the procedure for several years before deciding to proceed with fertility preservation.

Ocasio-Cortez expressed her desire to be transparent about the process, believing that women often lack sufficient education regarding their reproductive health and family planning options.

"I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs," Ocasio-Cortez stated. "I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that I was saving for it for a very long time."

First elected to Congress at the age of 28, Ocasio-Cortez noted that serving in public office from a young age meant navigating significant life decisions under public scrutiny, a unique experience compared to most individuals.

"When you get elected young, you have to grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately," she remarked.

The New York representative voiced her hope that by sharing her experience, she could help normalize discussions surrounding fertility, pregnancy, menopause, perimenopause, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and other aspects of women's health that she perceives as frequently overlooked.

"As women in general, we are not taught about our bodies," Ocasio-Cortez commented, specifically mentioning puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, and conditions such as PCOS.

"I think we need to show more depictions of women having full lives in every context and every choice," she added.

Taking Control Amidst Political Scrutiny

Ocasio-Cortez presented her choice as an active step toward gaining more agency over her life.

"This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life," she affirmed. "If people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions. I feel empowered to make this choice."

She acknowledged that the ability to undergo such a procedure is a privilege, though she noted that technological advancements have contributed to making egg freezing more financially accessible.

Transitioning to a political discussion, Ocasio-Cortez recognized the potential "political tax" associated with disclosing such a personal decision. She contended that female politicians often face a level of scrutiny regarding marriage, pregnancy, and family planning that male politicians typically do not.

She also attributed blame to the Trump administration for what she characterized as an increasingly antagonistic environment for women's reproductive choices.

"In the political context that we're in, in an administration that is dedicated to politicizing women's bodies and taking our choices away from us and punishing us around decisions to be pregnant or not be pregnant," she stated.

Ocasio-Cortez further asserted, "Frankly, this administration has made pregnancy more dangerous than probably at any point in the last 30-plus years."

She concluded, "We're going to take our power back. And we have to talk about it."

Conservative Reactions and Future Plans

The announcement quickly drew criticism from some conservative commentators on social media. Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA, argued that Ocasio-Cortez's decision exemplified what he described as a broader progressive ideology that prioritizes career advancement over starting families.

"This is the message progressives spread when it comes to family formation, and one of the reasons why fertility rates are cratering," Kolvet posted on X.

He continued, "Just freeze your eggs, kids! Pursue that career, even if you've been engaged for 4 years to a man you've known since college. AOC turns 37 in a few weeks so if she got pregnant tomorrow it would already be a geriatric pregnancy. This is not female 'liberation,' it's a cautionary tale."

Ocasio-Cortez has been engaged to her long-term partner, Riley Roberts, since May 2022.

This disclosure of her egg-freezing plans comes approximately seven years after the New York Democrat famously warned in 2019 that "the world is gonna end in 12 years if we don't address climate change," leaving roughly five years remaining under that original projection.

Ocasio-Cortez intends to guide her audience through various stages of the egg-freezing process, including the hormone injections required before egg retrieval. She mentioned having already filmed herself unboxing her medications and administering her initial shot.

The congresswoman even shared her intention to administer one of the injections in the green room before appearing on an ABC morning program.

"I'm gonna take my shot in the green room before my interview," Ocasio-Cortez declared. "Because women can do anything."

She added, "I think it's bad--- that I'm gonna be, you know, giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out, talk about international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing."
