Alaska Runner Hospitalized After Defending Against Brown Bear Encounter in Anchorage

An individual out for a run in Anchorage, Alaska, was hospitalized this week after successfully fending off a brown bear attack. The incident occurred while the woman was running alone on the Wolverine Bowl trail in the Prospect Heights area.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), she managed to deter the aggressive animal by deploying bear spray. Following the encounter, she was transported to a local medical facility for treatment.

Wildlife biologists subsequently visited the site of the attack to collect samples, though no bears were observed in the vicinity during their investigation.

Wildlife Officials Issue Safety Warnings

The ADFG emphasizes the importance of reporting any sightings of bears or other wild animals exhibiting aggressive or unusual behavior. In response to the recent incident, warning signs have been erected at the Prospect Heights trailhead, and authorities are advising hikers to avoid any trails that have been closed.

Officials noted that the dense summer foliage can significantly reduce visibility on trails, increasing the likelihood of unexpected encounters with wildlife. They recommend choosing hiking routes that offer clear sightlines and are located away from known attractants, such as streams frequented by salmon.

Essential Bear Safety Practices

When venturing into areas known to be bear habitat, individuals are strongly encouraged to carry a deterrent, such as bear spray or a firearm. Additional safety recommendations include:

• Hiking in groups.
• Making noise to avoid surprising a bear.
• Remaining vigilant for any indications of bear presence.
• Never approaching bears.
• Keeping pets securely leashed.

The ADFG cautions that a bear may react defensively if startled, particularly if it has cubs or is protecting a food cache. Such a reaction could manifest as agitation, including huffing, stomping, making tooth-popping sounds, salivating, flattening its ears, or even charging.

In the event of a bear encounter, the department advises individuals to remain calm, maintain their position, prepare their deterrent, stay together if in a group, and speak in a calm voice. It is crucial never to run from a bear.

If the bear is stationary, move away slowly while keeping your eyes on the bear. If the bear starts to move toward you or charges, stop and stand your ground. Let the bear know you are not a threat. Behaving calmly, moving slowly, and speaking in a low calm voice will help de-escalate the situation. If the bear continues to approach, use your deterrent when the bear is within range.

Second Recent Bear Incident in Anchorage

This recent attack comes less than a month after another woman sustained injuries in a bear mauling within Anchorage. In July, the victim was walking with a friend and her three dogs in the Bear Valley residential neighborhood, an area adjacent to Chugach State Park in south Anchorage, when a bear approached them.

Authorities indicated that the hikers were traversing an informal, user-created path that ascended a steep hillside in a zigzag pattern. The area was characterized by heavy overgrowth and dense vegetation, which severely limited visibility and heightened the risk of startling local wildlife.

The ADFG reported that the bear emerged from dense alder bushes, briefly made contact with one of the hikers, and then departed the scene. The woman suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was expected to make a full recovery.
