The Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) released a statement on Friday, championing the diverse experiences, cultures, lifestyles, and viewpoints within its membership. This declaration comes as the discourse surrounding transgender athletes has become a prominent topic within the league.
To everyone who loves this game: The WNBPA represents 200+ individual people with different lived experiences, cultures, lifestyles, and opinions. We embrace justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Those are the values that unite this Union and allow it to protect women's sports while creating transformational change,
the WNBPA stated. The association further emphasized its stance against animosity and prejudice, asserting,
Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm. We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.
The WNBPA also urged fans and supporters to take action, advising them to report hateful or abusive behavior at games to security and to combat online harassment by reporting abusive posts. Additionally, the statement encouraged individuals to contact their elected officials to advocate for stronger Title IX protections.
Player Comments Spark Discussion
This statement from the WNBPA was issued more than two weeks after remarks from player Sophie Cunningham were published, in which she expressed concerns about protecting young female athletes. Cunningham stated,
I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men. I'll always believe in that. It's really important to protect children, and that's little girls who are also involved in that category.
The WNBPA's announcement also followed former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom's social media post, where he declared his intention to enter the WNBA draft. Freedom asserted he had met all eligibility requirements and simply needed to identify as a woman to participate.

Since Cunningham's initial comments, a number of players and coaches have openly shared their perspectives on the issue, both during and after games, with many appearing to hold differing views from Cunningham.
