Stefon Diggs Declares Himself NFL's Top No. 2 Receiver Amid Free Agency Search

Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs is actively seeking his next opportunity in the National Football League as training camps across the country prepare to commence later this month. Diggs, who will be entering his 12th professional season, recently made a strong declaration regarding his standing among the league's pass-catchers.

Defining a "Number Two" Receiver

In a video shared on his personal YouTube channel, Diggs asserted that he is the top No. 2 receiver in the league, elaborating on his reasoning.

Everybody got a 1, Opportunities aside, people might say there’s seven real 1s. In my opinion, I can compete with anybody, but take those as your 1s. You can’t name a No. 2 better than me. There’s not a No. 2 on a team. Let’s presumably give people the credit and just say, ‘OK, you want to take the No. 1 spot away.’ Name your No. 2 receiver right now. Tell me how much he makes. My last question is: Is he better than me?

The 32-year-old wideout recorded 1,013 receiving yards during his 11th season in 2023, accumulating 85 receptions on 102 targets and scoring four touchdowns. This marked Diggs' seventh season surpassing the 1,000-yard receiving mark in his career, a feat he has accomplished in seven of the last eight years. He previously played for the Buffalo Bills for four seasons before being traded to the New England Patriots in March and subsequently released by them shortly thereafter.

Diggs indicated that he would be open to a role as a No. 2 option, suggesting a willingness to potentially accept a reduced salary to join a team capable of contending for the playoffs and, ultimately, the Super Bowl. However, as of now, no team has finalized a deal with the experienced receiver.

Overcoming Off-Field Challenges

A factor that may have influenced his market could be previous legal challenges. In December, Diggs faced serious allegations, including felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault, stemming from a dispute with his private chef.

However, Diggs was found not guilty by a jury in the case. Following the verdict, the NFL concluded its own review of the matter, determining there was insufficient evidence to justify a suspension under its personal conduct policy. Diggs' attorney commented on the situation, stating that "professional athletes have a target on their back."

After being released by the Patriots in March, Diggs has remained focused on maintaining his fitness and seeking his next professional opportunity since the league officially cleared him last month.

Several teams could potentially be in the market for a receiver of Diggs' caliber. Among those to consider are the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and Kansas City Chiefs. A reunion with the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen, with whom Diggs developed a strong connection leading to four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2020 to 2023, also remains a possibility.
