Minneapolis Mayor Frey Extends Solidarity to Somali Community Amid State Fraud Investigations

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey recently addressed members of the city's Somali community, expressing unwavering solidarity and commending their significant contributions to the urban landscape. His remarks were delivered during celebrations for Somali Independence Day, where he emphasized the community's integral role in Minneapolis.

These statements by Mayor Frey occurred while the state of Minnesota continues to draw attention for several high-profile fraud investigations. Weeks prior, a report from a Republican-led House Oversight Committee alleged that Governor Tim Walz's administration had failed to act on repeated warnings regarding extensive fraud within state social services programs.

During his address on Saturday, Mayor Frey conveyed a powerful message to the Somali community.

"Through the most difficult of times and through Operation Metro surge, we all saw that they tried to come for some of us," Frey stated. "And when that happens, we say that you're coming for all of us."

He further elaborated on the city's stance:

"In Minneapolis, we loved our neighbors. In Minneapolis, we do not see you as immigrants. We see you as our family. You are our brothers. You’re our sisters. You have done so much for this incredible city, and for that, we stand with you."

The Mayor's reference to "Operation Metro Surge" appears to point to a Trump administration initiative focused on immigration enforcement and public safety within Minnesota.

This operation concluded in February after its leader, Tom Homan, announced that it had led to the arrest of over 4,000 individuals in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and had reportedly mitigated public safety threats.

Mayor Frey subsequently shared a video of his speech on social media, writing, "Happy Somali Independence Day." He added, "Here in Minnesota, home to one of the largest Somali communities in the United States, we celebrate the resilience, culture, and leadership that continue to enrich our city and community."

Federal Scrutiny Over State Social Services

The House Oversight Committee's report, released earlier this month, presented serious allegations against Governor Walz's administration. It claimed that the administration repeatedly overlooked warnings about fraudulent activities in state social services programs, notably including the extensive Feeding Our Future scandal.

According to the committee, more than 110 individuals have been indicted in connection with various fraud schemes across Minnesota. The report highlighted that many of these defendants have been identified as members of the state's Somali immigrant community.

Additionally, the report asserted that concerns over potential claims of racial discrimination contributed to delays in addressing the suspected fraud. It estimated that Minnesota incurred a loss of approximately $300 million in federal child nutrition funds that were stolen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials within the Walz administration have publicly challenged and disputed the findings presented in the committee's report.
