Kirkwood, one of the American competitors in the field, established his lead early in the event, overtaking Álex Palou, and demonstrated consistent speed throughout the weekend. His performance during the race was particularly robust, with only Palou initially matching his pace at various points.

Despite Kirkwood's early dominance, a series of late-race caution periods diminished his substantial advantage, creating an opportunity for Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren. Lundgaard, who currently faces an uncertain future regarding a seat for the next season, capitalized on his red alternate tires during the initial phase of the final green flag segment. This choice offered a temporary edge over Kirkwood, who was running on a primary tire compound.
