PGA Golfer Sahith Theegala's Fiancée Disputes SportsCenter Host's Account of 'Uncomfortable' Interaction

A public disagreement has emerged between Juju Chan, the fiancée of PGA Tour professional Sahith Theegala, and ESPN SportsCenter anchor Gary Striewski, stemming from a brief encounter at a coffee shop last weekend during the Travelers Championship.

The incident, which both parties later discussed on their respective social media platforms, centers on a perceived difference in comfort levels during the interaction and the subsequent public recounting of events.

SportsCenter Host's Perspective

According to Striewski, he recognized Chan from her active presence on social media, where she boasts a substantial following, including 47,000 followers on Instagram and 69,000 on TikTok. He stated that he approached Chan while Theegala was ordering coffee.

Striewski recounted sitting near Chan and whispering, "Has anyone spotted you yet?" He said Chan responded concisely, "I guess now."

"That was weird," Striewski remarked about the interaction. "Again, I understand, people want to be left alone, people don't want to be bothered. But, if you are a person that outwardly lives your life on social media, and somebody recognizes you on social media ... it was weird."

Juju Chan Offers Counter-Narrative

Chan, however, presented a significantly different interpretation of the encounter and Striewski's subsequent actions. She labeled his behavior "extremely unprofessional" and accused him of fabricating a misleading account of what transpired.

In a TikTok video, Chan explained her discomfort with the comment but noted her attempt to defuse the situation with humor.

"I was uncomfortable with the comment, but I was also trying to laugh it off," Chan stated. "The interaction that he's explaining did not happen the way he's saying it did. To me, what he said was weird. I responded light-heartedly and laughed as I said, 'I guess now.'"

She emphasized the brevity of the exchange, describing it as a "three-second interaction." Chan further criticized Striewski for publicizing the incident and potentially inciting negativity towards her.

"I think it's extremely unprofessional, given the line of work that he's in, to bring this three-second interaction to the internet and to encourage people to hate on me," she added.

Sahith Theegala Defends Chan

PGA Tour star Sahith Theegala publicly supported his fiancée, commenting on her social media post.

"That guy should have never put you in a position like this," Theegala wrote. "I love you so much and I’m incredibly proud of how you’ve handled it my queen. I see how kind and caring you are to all that interact with you and the people close to us know your real, incredible self."

The contrasting accounts have sparked discussion online regarding the boundaries of public interaction with individuals who maintain a significant social media presence.
