Comedian Larry David's Criticism
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has offered a sharp retort to comedian Larry David's recent remarks criticizing the White House's celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary with a UFC event. Speaking at the premiere of his new HBO series, "Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness," David characterized the mixed martial arts event as a "travesty." He further elaborated, "What else can you say about it? It was embarrassing. I was embarrassed to be an American."
Senator Fetterman's Cinematic Rebuttal
During an interview with TMZ on Wednesday, Senator Fetterman invoked a memorable line from a 1981 comedy, "Stripes," to counter David's sentiments. "I’d say lighten up, Francis," Fetterman stated.
This particular phrase originates from a scene in the Bill Murray film where a character named Francis, portrayed by Conrad Dunn, requests to be called "Psycho" during Army basic training. Sergeant Hulka, played by Warren Oates, famously responds with the now-iconic retort.
The cinematic allusion initially puzzled the TMZ reporter, who repeatedly sought clarification from the senator. Fetterman continued to admonish David, urging him to "get over himself" and expressing strong disagreement with the comedian's declared embarrassment. "Hey, I’m proud to be an American, and if you are embarrassed or whatever because of a UFC thing, get over yourself, dude," Fetterman asserted.
Details of the White House Event
The "UFC Freedom Fight 250" took place on the South Lawn of the White House, coinciding with President Trump's 80th birthday celebration earlier this month. The gathering attracted approximately 1,200 active-duty service members and an estimated 4,000 general spectators. Both President Trump and UFC president Dana White were present for the occasion.
Attendees were treated to a rendition of the national anthem by the Marine Band and Zac Brown. The event concluded with an impressive flyover featuring the Navy’s Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds. Prior to departing the White House for the G7 summit in France, the president remarked to reporters that the event "was beyond anything that anybody's ever seen in sports."
