As the United States approaches its historic 250th anniversary, a prominent faith-based organization is calling on parents to utilize Independence Day as an opportunity to deepen family connections and educate children on the foundational principles of the nation.
In anticipation of July 4th festivities, Communio, a faith-driven group dedicated to fortifying family structures, has unveiled its "Great American Family Fun Kit." This comprehensive resource offers a variety of activity suggestions, recipes for themed refreshments, and a national prayer. Among the proposed activities are exploring 18th-century vocabulary, establishing a gratitude jar, designing a unique family flag, and organizing an Independence Day scavenger hunt.
Leveraging its extensive network of partnerships with 17,000 churches nationwide, Communio aims to engage families, inspiring them to commemorate Independence Day through local gatherings, community block parties, and activities designed to strengthen neighborhood bonds.
Fostering National Pride and Family Bonds
B. De Gance, the founder and president of Communio, emphasized the critical role of the family unit.
"The most fundamental building block of a society is not the individual, it's the family," De Gance stated.
De Gance noted that contemporary surveys indicate a decrease in national pride and traditional patriotism among many Americans. He explained the kit's objective:
"I think there's a lot of recent polling data that shows love of country, good old-fashioned patriotism, has declined in our nation amongst a lot of folks. And the goal here is to tie people back to the ideals of our founding and do so in a really grassroots, organic way at the local level."
While the activities within the kit are specifically curated to commemorate America's 250th milestone, De Gance highlighted their broader intent: to motivate families to dedicate more quality time to each other, disconnected from digital devices. He affirmed that even straightforward engagements can generate significant opportunities for parents and children to bond.
Although the kit might initially seem designed for younger children, it also incorporates elements intended to engage teenagers. De Gance pointed out that the scavenger hunt, for instance, could serve as an inclusive activity for children across various age groups.
Addressing Youth Loneliness and Future Generations
De Gance additionally drew attention to the increasing prevalence of reported loneliness and feelings of sadness among American adolescents, suggesting that consistent family interaction could be a crucial strategy in addressing these challenges.
He elaborated on this perspective:
"I think if we were honest with ourselves… there's probably not a high number of those kids who would report having frequent time with their family and siblings and recreation and fun together, right? Because when that happens, they're more likely to report having a good relationship with their mom and dad, and they're less likely to report being lonely and being isolated."
Envisioning the nation's future, De Gance expressed a desire for a resurgence of strong marriages and robust family life throughout the country. He conveyed optimism that younger generations are increasingly seeking purpose in "enduring things," including faith, marital commitment, and familial bonds.
He concluded by asserting:
"The pathway to making sure that we celebrate America 300 and America 350 and America 400, really runs through the family."
