In a devastating incident described by authorities as a "targeted mass shooting," seven members of the same family were shot in East St. Louis, Illinois, on Sunday, resulting in five fatalities and two serious injuries.
Illinois State Police confirmed during a press briefing that two teenage individuals, both aged 16, have been taken into custody in connection with the shootings. As of now, formal charges have not yet been filed against the suspects.
Investigation Underway in East St. Louis
The violent events unfolded across several locations within East St. Louis, including the vicinity of 39th and Summit, the Gompers public housing project, and Jones Park. Emergency services transported two injured individuals to a hospital, where they are receiving treatment for serious wounds, while five others tragically lost their lives.
"I just want to say these alleged acts of horrific violence, taking this number of lives here in this community — it's terrible, it's evil, but it will not keep this city down," a police official stated.
Officials reiterated their condemnation of the incident, characterizing it as a "terrible, terrible act of violence." Despite the gravity of the situation, law enforcement has assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the broader community.
