Cristiano Ronaldo Hints at Retirement, Suggests Current Season Could Be His Last

Cristiano Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of the most distinguished figures in football history, has suggested that the current season could mark the conclusion of his illustrious playing career.

In a recent interview with Vogue, the Portuguese superstar conveyed that the upcoming football year would "probably be my last year of football." At 41 years old, Ronaldo’s contemplation of retirement follows his recent marriage to longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez, hinting at a desire to prioritize family life.

A Distinguished Career and Recent Milestones

Ronaldo currently plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, a club he joined in 2023. During his tenure, he has demonstrated his scoring prowess, netting 102 goals across 107 matches. His international career with Portugal also saw him participate in his sixth World Cup. Despite his ambition to secure the trophy, Portugal's journey ended in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain.

It is widely anticipated that Ronaldo has concluded his appearances for the Portugal national team, having accumulated an impressive record of 11 goals in 27 World Cup appearances. Overall, his international career for his country boasts 146 goals in 233 matches.

Reflecting on his career, Ronaldo expressed a desire to "leave a spectacular legacy," an accomplishment he has undeniably achieved through his numerous years in the sport.

Envisioning Life Beyond the Pitch

As he looks toward a future away from competitive football, Ronaldo has a clear vision for his next chapter.

"I have my future all mapped out," he explained. "I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one. And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned – what we’ve earned. Because after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."

Al-Nassr is set to commence their season on Tuesday. Should this indeed be Ronaldo’s final year in professional football, his last scheduled match would occur on May 28, 2027.

A Legacy of Unparalleled Excellence

Throughout his remarkable career, Ronaldo has been honored with the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, recognizing the world's best footballer, on five separate occasions. He holds the record for most nominations for the award, with 18.
