Congressional Hearing on Sanctuary Policies Descends Into Shouting Match Between Raskin and Lawler

A House Judiciary Committee session focused on sanctuary city regulations escalated into a contentious verbal confrontation on Tuesday, involving Representatives Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, and Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland. The two legislators exchanged accusations, each suggesting the other lacked genuine concern for the lives of Americans lost due to alleged actions by undocumented immigrants, or for anti-ICE demonstrators who died during encounters with federal agents.

Heated Exchange Over Victim Outrage

During the committee's proceedings concerning sanctuary policies, Representative Lawler criticized some of his colleagues, implying a lack of empathy regarding the fatalities of Laken Riley and Sheridan Gorman. These two women were reportedly killed in separate incidents by individuals identified as undocumented immigrants. Lawler, however, contrasted this with the visible indignation expressed by some over the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Good and Pretti, described as anti-ICE activists, were fatally shot by federal agents in Minnesota earlier this year during alleged interference with law enforcement operations.

"So while some of my colleagues may not want to hear the truth, the same outrage you feel about Renee Good and Alex Pretti, you should feel about Sheridan Gorman and Laken Riley and every Angel family in this country," Lawler asserted.

The exchange quickly intensified.

"I do feel that outrage. You do not," Raskin retorted loudly.

"You do not, because if you did, you would not support sanctuary jurisdictions. You should be ashamed of yourself. You should be ashamed of yourself, Jamie. You're a disgrace," Lawler responded.

The confrontation reached a peak when Raskin challenged Lawler.

"Do you feel the outrage of Renee Good and Alex Pretti?" Raskin demanded. "You don't belong on this committee. You should get the hell out of here!"

Debate on Sanctuary Policies and Federal Enforcement

Representative Lawler referenced an opinion piece he authored, published on January 27, which addressed the deaths of Good and Pretti. In his commentary, Lawler stated:

"The deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis this month were tragic and preventable. No matter where you stand on immigration enforcement, the shootings show that what the country has been doing is not working."

He further elaborated on the tactics employed by federal agencies:

"Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection are conducting forceful operations in American communities. They should reassess their current tactics."

Representative Raskin has consistently advocated for sanctuary policies. These policies are designed to protect undocumented immigrants, including those who have been arrested or convicted of crimes, from federal immigration authorities. He has frequently defended these policies, arguing against what he perceives as federal overreach and emphasizing that compelling local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration statutes is unconstitutional.
