An American Airlines flight en route to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) from Atlanta experienced a laptop battery fire onboard on Friday, according to reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Flight 2398, an Airbus A321, was approaching DFW when the crew reported the incident. Flight attendants successfully managed to contain the blaze using a specialized thermal containment bag, the FAA confirmed.

The aircraft landed safely at DFW around 6:55 p.m. local time and proceeded to the gate under its own power. Emergency personnel met the plane upon arrival, following standard procedures. The FAA has initiated an investigation into the occurrence.

An airline spokesperson issued a statement:

American Airlines flight 2398 landed safely at DFW after reports of smoke from a customer’s device during landing. We thank our crew for their professionalism and swift response to quickly contain the device.

Passenger Accounts and Potential Injuries

The flight was carrying 133 individuals when the incident unfolded. Jessica Irgens, a passenger on the flight, recounted that the fire began approximately 30 minutes before landing, originating from another passenger’s laptop which started smoking before igniting.

Irgens, who was seated two rows away, moved towards the rear of the aircraft due to the significant smoke. She observed the laptop's owner placing the burning device in the aisle, with other passengers attempting to assist.

Audio recordings from air traffic control indicated that the pilot informed controllers approximately four to five passengers might have sustained burns from the device.

Understanding Lithium Battery Risks

The FAA highlights that lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in laptops, mobile phones, and various other electronic gadgets, are susceptible to overheating due to a phenomenon called thermal runaway.

This process, according to the FAA, can occur without any prior warning. Several factors can trigger thermal runaway, including battery damage, exposure to excessive heat or water, overcharging, or improper packaging.
