Alex Palou Leads Final Freedom 250 Grand Prix Practice Amid Multiple Red Flags

The second practice session for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix commenced on a dry track, a significant change from the earlier session where teams tested wet weather tires. With qualifying just hours away, competitors were keen to maximize their dry-weather preparation.

The session experienced its first major interruption approximately ten minutes in, when Graham Rahal’s No. 15 Honda brought out a red flag. As the seasoned driver approached a crucial braking zone, the rear of his vehicle became unsettled, making contact with the wall. This incident left Rahal stranded in the run-off area, unfortunately cutting short his valuable track time ahead of qualifying.

Challenging Circuit Features Drivers

As drivers gained familiarity with the deceptively complex seven-turn street circuit and the track conditions remained dry, lap times progressively improved. However, the circuit's challenges continued to manifest, particularly in the braking zone leading into Turn 6.

This identical section of the track later caught out Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammate Louis Foster. Foster lost control after hitting an uneven patch on the track surface, sending his car into the inside wall. The impact damaged his front wing and triggered the session's second red flag. Crucially, unlike Rahal, Foster managed to guide his car back to the pits after its nose cone had detached, allowing his team to inspect the damage and facilitate his return to the track.

The bump encountered in the braking zone before Turn 6 is expected to be a critical point that drivers will closely monitor during both the upcoming qualifying rounds and Sunday’s main race.

Palou Leads Charge, Kirkwood Impresses

Team Penske demonstrated their strategic timing, with Scott McLaughlin in the No. 3 Chevrolet posting what was then the fastest lap of the day, a 56.895 on primary tires, late in the combined practice session.

The latter part of practice saw several drivers switch to the quicker, alternate tires, providing an early indication of their single-lap qualifying potential. After both groups completed their runs, Alex Palou emerged at the top of the leaderboard. He recorded a 56.615 lap time on a fresh set of red alternate tires.

Close behind Palou was Kyle Kirkwood, who achieved a rapid 56.691 on primary tires. Kirkwood, recognized as a specialist on street courses, appeared to have untapped speed in his car. The true competitive landscape, however, will become clearer once qualifying concludes.
